Same-sex marriage not a religious issue

Dear Sir,

I was greatly encouraged by the sensible and insightful letter from Elizabeth Kitson on the subject of same-sex marriage; would that there were more people who thought as she does.

Recently I heard homosexual relationships condemned as “an abomination”.

What a dreadful thing to say. Where is the tolerance, where is the human kindness, where is the Christian charity?

The question of same-sex marriage is not a religious issue, it is a legal issue. The one thing has nothing to do with the other. And now we are being bombarded with enormous advertisements exhorting us to preserve marriage. Why?

Do the heterosexuals among us feel so threatened by the idea of same-sex marriage that they must resort to such measures?

The truth of the matter is that it is really nobody’s business. Many years ago, Pierre Trudeau, at that time the Prime Minister of Canada, famously said that “the state has no place in the bedrooms of the nation”. Indeed.
