The greatest Gombeys on Earth

Who’s got the moves? Harrington Sound Primary School students join in the fun with the Gombeys in St George’s as part of the America’s Cup celebrations

On our America’s Cup visit to St George’s we were invited to join the Gombeys dancing in the square. We felt so confident and a little nervous at the same time because a huge crowd surrounded our group. The leader of the Gombeys showed us how the dancers expressed their feelings through dance.

He told us about the history of Gombeys and we were surprised that they had been in existence since 1837. The masks look very angry and they all have different looks to identify their dancer. The costumes are colourful and vibrant we are lucky to have several boys at our school who are dancers.

It was an incredible experience and I hope I will remember the dance for the rest of my life.
