Dominant Stefaniuk retains Optimist titles

Dominant display: Stefaniuk won five of the eight races at the Bermuda Open and National Optimist Championships

Tayte Stefaniuk stamped his authority over last weekend’s Bermuda Open and National Optimist Championships in the Great Sound.

The son of Steve Stefaniuk, the Bermuda Optimist Dinghy Association president, was simply at his best, winning five of the eight races contested to retain both titles.

Adam Larson, a sailor previously representing Bermuda now competing out of the United States, finished second, with Jordan Etemadi rounding off the podium in third. Only eight points separating the top three sailors.

Camille Chin-Gurret was the top local female sailor for the second straight year, while Sarah Shumann was the top female sailor overall.

Christian Ebbin, 10, was the top junior sailor and fifth overall. Among the notables was Ethan Medeiros, who copped the Peter Mitchell award for good sportsmanship.

Regatta co-hosts BODA and the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club could not have asked for better conditions during the two-day event — eight to 12 knots on Saturday and up to 20 knots the day after.

The 45-strong championship fleet comprised of 17 overseas sailors from the US, Canada, Italy, New Zealand and Australia and 28 from Bermuda, with a further 27 sailors taking part in a separate regatta for novices.
