Benn Smith has vowed re-evaluate his training methods after being concerned about his performances in the Laser class at the Pan American Games.

Smith came seventeenth in a fleet of 21 boats and failed in his objective of a top-ten finish to reach the medal races at the Yacht Club Peruano in La Bahía de Paracas.

The 20-year-old placed fourteenth and eighteenth in his final two races yesterday to finish on 158 points from ten outings.

“The first race was probably a little bit better than the second race, which did not go well,” Smith said.

“Overall, I’m not happy with how I did, but I guess that’s just how it goes. It was quite windy today, probably gusting at 22 knots at some points.”

As well as taking a closer look at his preparations, Smith believes he must put on weight so he can better cope in the windier conditions.

“I’ll try and re-evaluate how I’m training before the event because I’m not happy at all with how [the Pan Am Games] went,” said Smith, who attends the College of Charleston in South Carolina.

“I also need to focus on getting my weight up from 80 kilograms to 85 kilograms.”

Smith will now turn his attentions to the Ample World Cup Series Miami in Key Biscayne, Florida, in January, when he hopes to qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo next summer.

“I’m going to take a couple of weeks off and find some focus towards Miami,” he added.

“Hopefully, I’ll be able to get in good training in December, possibly in Athens [Greece] with some good guys.”

Meanwhile, siblings Cecilia and Michael Wollmann saved their best to last in the Nacra 17 class yesterday, finishing fifth in their twelfth and final race of the series. They placed eighth overall.
