Trott ‘ticks all the boxes’

Highly rated: West Ham goalkeeper Trott

Former England goalkeeper Chris Woods, West Ham United’s first-team goalkeeping coach, believes that Nathan Trott has a very bright future at the Premier League club.

The Bermudian put pen to paper on a new three-and-a-half year deal this week — much to the delight of Woods, who has worked with the 18-year-old several times this season.

“The lad’s got great potential and it’s so difficult to find good, young goalkeepers,” Woods, who won 43 England caps in the Eighties and Nineties, said. “Nathan ticks all the boxes.

“He’s the type of lad who wants to listen and wants to do well and he’s a joy to work with.

“For my aims and for Nathan’s this season, he needs to continue to play in the Under-23s. He’s been called up to the England [Under-19] squad so to play for them on a regular basis would make a really good season for him.”

Terry Westley, who leads West Ham’s Academy of Football, said Trott is a “great signing for the club”.

“He’s a young boy with a lot more to come,” Westley said. “His decision-making in the pro game will be the defining factor as to whether he can really kick on. But he certainly has the ingredients.”

Trott’s previous experience playing outfield continues to work to his advantage.

“The way that goalkeeping has moved on over the years; he’s got great feet, he’s got the ability to see the pass, to control the ball, his agility is second to none,” Woods said.

Trott is keen to push on. “I want to give myself extra time for me to work and I want to try to prove to fans that I can become a really great player,” he said.
