Simons an injury doubt for Chesterfield

Forced off: Simons suffered an injury in the first half of Monday’s defeat by Scunthorpe

Rai Simons is a doubt for Sky Bet League One side Chesterfield today against Charlton Athletic after picking up a first-half injury in Monday’s defeat by Scunthorpe United, which sealed Chesterfield’s relegation.

The Bermuda striker was given a rare start this season, but was forced off after 33 minutes after picking up an injury. Chesterfield lost 3-1 and manager Gary Caldwell admitted afterwards that his players were not good enough. He has warned them now that they are playing to save their careers in the remaining matches of the season and has urged them to show what they can do and reward their long-suffering fans with a victory today.

“I’ve said it to the players since I have been here, on numerous occasions, that they are playing for their lives every week,” Caldwell told the Derbyshire Times yesterday.

“They are playing for their career at Chesterfield or their career in football. When you slip into the bottom tier your career in football is in jeopardy, not your Chesterfield career.

“They know what is at stake, although there is nothing at stake in terms of staying up. The players have to go out and do it for themselves and for the fans.”

Caldwell said this week that he has been pleased with the reaction to relegation from the players in training.

“It was flat at the beginning of the week, people are hurt, people are disappointed and it affects people’s lives,” he said of relegation. “There is a period of flatness within the group, but then we have come out of that and the players have been excellent in training and preparing for Charlton.

“The players were as good as I have seen for a while. We have to take that on to the pitch.”

Meanwhile, Nahki Wells and his Huddersfield Two team-mates will look to seal their spot in the promotion playoffs in the Championship today when they play host to Fulham.

Huddersfield are fourth, a point behind Reading but with a game in hand.

The Terriers are five points clear of Leeds United, who sit one place below the playoffs and have four games remaining compared to three for the other teams around them.
