Canada have announced their training squad for their international football friendly against Bermuda at the National Stadium on Sunday.

The 28-man squad, featuring players predominantly from clubs in out-of-season leagues in North America, will be whittled down to 18 and will arrive in Bermuda on Thursday.

The Canadian team, coached by Michael Findlay, have been based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, since last Thursday preparing for their first match since losing 2-0 away to South Korea in November.

Findlay, the team’s interim coach, said the Bermuda match will serve as a valuable warm-up game for his players ahead of their preseason training.

“We want to give our players an early advantage heading into their preseasons, but also give our staff an opportunity to observe, evaluate, and educate a larger group of players,” Findlay said.

“This project also provides an internal competition within the larger group as only 18 will be selected for travel to the match.”

Players from all five Canadian professional teams — Toronto FC, Montreal Impact, Ottawa Fury, FC Edmonton and Vancouver Whitecaps — are included in the squad.

Some of the most experienced players include Marcel de Jong, Dejan Jakovi, Will Johnson, Nik Ledgerwood, Tosaint Ricketts, and Adam Straith.

More than half the squad is 24 or younger, including eight who have yet to make their international debut.

The squad also includes five players who have received their first call-ups to team: Molham Babouli, Marco Carducci, Jay Chapman, Raheem Edwards, and Ben McKendry.

Unavailable through injury are both David Edgar, of Whitecaps and Cyle Larin, of Orlando City.

Bermuda face Canada at the National Stadium at 3pm on Sunday and will be broadcast live on Canadasoccer.com.

It will mark the ninth meeting between the two nations dating back to World Cup qualifiers in 1968.

Canada are unbeaten in that stretch with four wins and four draws, including a 3-0 win in their last meeting ten years ago on March 25 2007.

Canada’s scorers were Atiba Hutchinson, Tomasz Radzinski and Paul Stalteri.

Over the past two years, Canada’s overall record is nine wins, seven draws and eight losses in 24 international matches against all opponents.
