Race is dedicated to Joell's memory as riders, spectators mark his passing
Hundreds turned out on Sunday to pay tribute to former motocross rider Melvin (Buddy) Joell as the third race day in the Pepsi National Championships was dedicated to his memory.
Joell died suddenly on the evening of the last race day and the tribute came just two days after he was laid to rest on Friday following a funeral procession from Hamilton to St. George's that was led by both motorcycle police and motocross riders.
On Sunday all the competitors paid a stirring tribute to Joell as Joell's 125cc bike was on display. His mother, Enda, was also at the track and received carnations from riders in each of the classes who then rode two laps in Buddy's honour.
Ms. Joell was wearing a "Kawasaki Team Green'' button and tee shirt, both with pictures of her son. Tomorrow would have been his 25th birthday.
Joell's riding career, which began in his early teens, started in the 80cc class and went through to the 250 Expert class.
In racing, Maurice Symons won all the pee wee 50 races while Gary Cann was the runner up and Shannon Mello took a deserved third place.
Steven Panchaud and Chris DeSilva finished first and second on their 60cc bikes, Panchaud winning the first and second motos and DeSilva the third.
Jamal Hassell had a perfect day, winning all three races in the 80cc class while Howard Paynter was second with three seconds and Craig Panchaud third with two thirds and a fourth.
Kemo Simons ran out front to win the first and second motos in the 125C class but a fall in the third race pulled him back to fourth as Jason DeSilva took the win to finish second overall. Third for the day was Clevie (Bicken) Maybury who almost won the very first 80cc. He put in a respectable third, and two seconds for the day.
In the 125 B class, where Joell last competed, Robbie Smith extended his streak to 13 wins with three more wins while Justin Belboda had three seconds and Chris Maxwell was third with a fourth and two thirds.
The next race day is on December 4.
