B.TEC is hailing a new mentoring practicum a success after seven CedarBridge Academy students participated in the 400 level BSC Computer Science course which was developed in collaboration with the B.TEC initiative and had the full support of local IT companies. The goal of the course was to allow students to link what they learned in previous BSC computer science courses to the real world of practice and application.

At the beginning of the course in September, the students worked along with their computer science teacher, Racquel Rose-Greene, to research and develop a proposal for their intended practicum experience in one of four categories: programming, multimedia, IT support, and network systems.

B.TEC project manager, Kristin White, assisted both senior schools with placing students at various companies including the Registrar of Companies, GMD Consulting and Gateway Systems.

"Although the students were scheduled to work at the companies for a double period as assigned, most students continued working until the end of the business day, and also continued to work at the company beyond the course required period. These youngsters contributed greatly to the companies, assisting with and, in some cases, individually handling projects," she said.

Logic Communications was so impressed with student Adrian Fiddes after he helped successfully recover an under utilised web hosting server that the company offered him holiday employment.

Wendell Ebbin, Adrian's Logic Communications mentor, said that Adrian's impressive overall performance changed his view of some of the public school programmes. "This mentoring programme has been very beneficial to Adrian and sheds a positive light on the youth of Bermuda, which are so often misunderstood. As long as the students are as eager to learn as Adrian, I welcome future mentorships as I had a great pleasure in partaking in the furthering of youth," Mr. Ebbin said.

Adrian was also keen to endorse the programme saying, "I would definitely recommend the Mentored Practicum for any student who wants to get involved in IT. I especially enjoyed working with Logic, it's a great local company."

B.TEC is hopeful that even more students and companies will be interested in participating in the programme in the coming school year.
