Damaged cottage levelled

A cottage on Par-la-Ville Road has been levelled by the City of Hamilton.

Now the area may be redeveloped into a small park, or used for bike or car parking.

The house, which stood on a rock outcrop at the junction of Par-la-Ville Road and Dundonald Street, was condemned by the city after suffering major damage in Hurricanes Fay and Gonzalo two years ago.

A further inspection of the property revealed that it would need major interior work, which was found to be too expensive, so the house has been demolished and the outcrop on which it stood removed to bring the area down to ground level.

Ian Hind, senior engineer for the City, said: “The overall condition of the apartment was very bad. The cost of rebuilding was very prohibitive so, ultimately, we decided to demolish.”

But the City has ruled out redevelopment of the site,

Mr Hind said: “There are no plans to develop the site. it was taken down for safety reasons and because of the condition of the building. What will happen hasn’t been decided — there are options. We could make it a green space or extra bike parking spaces or car parking.”

The house had been occupied by employees of the City until they were evacuated and rehoused in the wake of the double whammy hurricane strike in 2014.
