Target of ex-Premier’s outburst misplaced

Blame game: former Premier Ewart Brown (Photograph by Blaire Simmons)

Dear Sir,

Having just returned to the island after a family holiday, I found myself catching up with the news and an article in the Saturday, July 23, 2016 edition of The Royal Gazette got me worked up. I am referring specifically to the article reporting the outbursts from our former Premier, Ewart Brown, about the costs undertaken by the Bermuda Police Service investigating corruption allegations against him.

Dr Brown, above, attempted to blame the One Bermuda Alliance government for these costs, even though the government of the day is not “in charge” of the BPS or judiciary. That is the Governor’s role, and rightly so. Keeping the police service and the judiciary away from the influences of the government of the day is key to having our law and order administered independently and thereby respected internationally.

What was also interesting from his outburst was the reference made to additional funds likely spent in the investigation since 2011, when the Progressive Labour Party was the government. So one can conclude that the OBA had nothing to do with initiating this investigation; rather, it was the BPS and the Governor following up on claims made that implicate the former Premier and likely some of his allies, going back to at least 2011. We can all see very clearly why the former Premier “doth protest too much”. He is well aware of how the legal system works and he should allow the investigation to conclude, rather than try to stir up public sentiment among his faithful sheep against the present government, and the Governor and police service.

I would like to suggest to the former Premier that he take a different approach and co-operate fully with the investigators by opening up his books and all beneficial assets to their scrutiny to determine the source of funds, etc.

Once everything can be forensically proven clean, he can shout from the mountaintops his innocence and the community will be right there behind him, myself included.
