Bermuda Day, London style

It’s going to be a little Dark ‘n Stormy at Camden Market, London on May 24 when fans of Bermuda get together to celebrate Bermuda Day in grand style. For the fifth year in a row, DJs Jeremy Blades and Cyril (Beatnik) Rubaine of SpreadLuv have organised the event.“Last year was probably our biggest Bermuda Day in London,” said Mr Blades, who lives in Liverpool. “About 2,000 people came through.”They expected that the buzz from last year would generate even more people this year.As such, they have expanded the bar area to a long balcony and cafe upstairs. There will be an area for children, stalls selling Bermuda-themed wares, lots of Dark ‘n Stormy drinks, and films. The highlight promises to be Bermuda musicians.“Our aim is to show off Bermudians to non-Bermudians,” said Mr Blades. “When we first did it it was because a lot of Bermudians weren’t able to get home for Bermuda Day. We got together and decided we needed to do something.”They started with a small event in a bar in Camden with Bermuda performers Matthew Bento, Clinark and Mark (Messenger) Lomas.“There are a lot of us living and working in the United Kingdom,” said Mr Blades.“We are working this year with Cha’Von Clarke’s CKC Corporation. We have a few of their artists coming through. There are a couple other people as well, we are just waiting for confirmation. We are pushing for Bermudian artists to have some international exposure. This year we reached out to people in Bermuda. We said if you can get here, you have somewhere to play in London. The bar is in Camden Market and there is so much foot traffic passing through. You will get an exposure that you won’t get anywhere else.”Their ultimate aim was to develop the event into a festival spotlighting Bermuda’s culture and heritage, he added. The event will be held on May 27 from 2pm to 3am at the Lockside Lounge and West Yard. For more information see the Facebook page Bermuda Day In London or call 07731948112 or 07777640037 or e-mail spreadluv@hotmail.co.uk .
