Annual Beer Mile fixed for Friday

The second annual Beer Mile will take place this Friday after being postponed last month owing to “unforeseen circumstances”.

Organiser Ian Morrison, of Bermuda Timing, said: “We really wanted to get good numbers out for the race and with so many other things happening on the initial date of the event, we thought it would be best to postpone it to give us more time to confirm some things, plan further and get more entries for the race.”

The event, which is sponsored by Beck’s beer, is scheduled to take place at the Bermuda Athletics Association field, with number pick-up now beginning at 6pm and the race starting at 7pm. Mr Morrison added: “The whole point of the Beer Mile is to just have a different kind of event, but the main goal is for people to have fun and enjoy themselves.

“We put this together to take away a bit of the seriousness of the regular running event and bring some nightlife into it.

“Since the date change we have already seen more entries and more competitors, so it should be an interesting race.”

Each participant must complete a one-mile run around BAA, drinking one 12oz beer every quarter of a mile.

The entry fee for individual participants remains at $30 and $80 for a team entry which includes four beers and a T-shirt for each runner. Participants must be 18 or older, and must provide a valid ID. Prizes will be offered to the winners of each of the categories.

The BAA bar will be open until 2am, food will be for sale at the field canteen and DJ Chubb will be playing music all night.
