Chayce books ticket to CAC Games
Bermuda's Chayce Smith placed second in the 800 metres at the Hokie Invitational Indoor Track meet in Blacksburg, Virginia on the weekend to qualify for the CAC Games.
Smith, competing for St. Augustines College, finished in a time of one minute, 52.46 seconds.
At the same meet, University of Georgia athlete, Latroya Darrell, took second place in the triple jump with a leap of 12.70 metres, a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) qualifying mark.
So far, Smith, Tre Houston, Tyrone Smith, Aranxta King, Shianne Smith and Aaron Evans, who was disqualified in the 600 metres at the meet, have all qualified for the CAC Games, which will be held in Puerto Rico in July.
Meanwhile, sprinter Jeneko Place has qualified for the Carifta Games, to be held in the Cayman Islands, in the 100 metres, 200 metres and 400 metres.
Place made the 'A' standard for the event during Bermuda Track Field Association's (BTFA) track and field meet at the National Sports Centre at the weekend.
Also making their respective standards at the meet were Shaquille Dill who made the grade for the under-20 800 metres, Victoria Clarke who will compete in the under-17 200 metres, and Alison Outerbridge who will perform in the Under-20 triple jump.
BTFA president Donna Watson said she was pleased with Place's performance and praised all those who had qualified for the Carifta Games.
"The surprise of the weekend was Jeneko Place, who has now qualified in the 100m, 200m and 400m," said Watson. "He had just run the 100m and turned around and ran the 400m and was well within the qualifying standard for the Under-17 Boys.
"Jeneko is definitely one of our athletes to watch and I see a good future ahead for him in track.
"He is one of our hopefuls to compete in the World Youth Olympics this summer and he is still very young, running the times that he is at the age of 15.
"There were not any notable surprises this weekend.
"The athletes who have qualified so far are some of the athletes who we have proposed.
"I would like to see more athletes qualify so they can then concentrate on getting fit and improve in their respective events and not have the pressure of trying to reach the qualifying standard."
High School Front Street Mile runner-up Henry Stevens-Carty and Tristan Joynes both performed admirably at the KTC High School Invitational in Tennessee.
Steven Carty came third in the 800 metres and second in the invitational mile while Joynes finished seventh in the 60 metres hurdles.
