Baltimore chasing a sixth ring
Baltimore Blast assistant coach David Bascome has –reflected on the team's –promising start to the season as the National Indoor Soccer League (NISL) powerhouse go in hunt of another championship title.
Since the franchise was founded in 1992, the Blast have won five titles and Bascome, who lifted three championship rings as a player, is adament they have the 'desire and –experience' to claim a sixth.
The Blast have opened the new campaign with victories over the Chicago Riot and the Omaha Vipers and will look to continue their good form when they tackle Missouri Comets at home this weekend.
“We're looking to win the championship, that's our main goal.
“You always want to win a championship and we've won five now we're out to get our sixth, “ said Bascome, the Island –Soccer League (ISL) –commissioner.
“We've got a good nucleus of players, about 75 percent of them have won already won championships with the team and we've had a better start than last year.
“We've picked up some good players like Marcel Millwood, who played for us previously, and we've got some young –talented players from the –outdoor game who are also gelling well.”
Last term saw the Blast –recover from a sluggish start to the season to finish third in the league table only to crash out at the semi-finals stage of the –competition, although Bascome –believes the Blast have –improved since then.
“We ended up third last year, made the play-offs, but went out in the semis. Milwaukee Wave will probably be our main rivals, they have some great players and a good coach in Keith –Tozer.”
Bascome, a former North –Village midfielder, revealed he has had several offers to become a head coach of a pro indoor team but turned them down to focus on his Hope4Life programme and the ISL six-a-side league, which he set up in Bermuda almost three-and-a-half years ago.
“This is going to be my fifth season as an assistant coach although I've been at the Blast for 18 years,” Bascome said.
“I've had some offers to be a head coach but that's not really where my interests lie.
“I turned them down as it takes up a lot of your time and I like my situation here as it –allows me to do a lot of my other stuff.
“The Hope4Life programme is going into the Baltimore schools and I'm doing a lot of community work with the players.”
