'Everyone feels sorry for us'

Most employees at Trimingham?s will have new jobs to go to when the landmark department store closes one month from today.

But Government?s Director of Labour, Milton Scott, is encouraging Trimingham?s workers facing redundancy who have not yet found employment to come to his office for assistance.

?The Ministry of Labour is pleased at the outpouring of support from corporate Bermuda,? Mr. Scott said. ?As a consequence, most of the displaced Trimingham?s workers have found other jobs.

?There are a small number of others who are weighing their options once the store closes on July 27 and this Ministry stands ready to assist them should they need additional support.?

Mr. Scott said Government had offered to assist Trimingham?s employees from the beginning and Government staff went to Trimingham?s and interviewed those who were interested in seeking other employment.

He pointed out that some staff were not actively seeking employment because they were waiting for their redundancy pay.

?If they are having difficulties finding employment they can come over to our offices and we are more than happy to assist them,? Mr. Scott said.

He also said that July is one of the hardest times to find employment because many students on summer vacation are hired by companies. spoke to various employees about future employment and none of them had found a job yet.

Ann Marie Alves, a two-year employee, said that she was having problems finding a new job.

She said that she has been looking for a new job since April 8 but no one in the retail sector is hiring.

?They are hiring all the school kids so hopefully when they go back to school in September they will be hiring,? she said. Ms Alves was the assistant buyer for handbags and shoes. She received her redundancy pay when the company announced its closure.

Ms Alves said that she may apply for a Government job if retail stores do not hire her.

When asked about how she feels about Trimingham?s closing, Ms Alves said: ?I feel upset because I lost my job. I never expected it to close so quickly. This is a disappointment to the whole Island?.

Student sales associate Nicole Clark said that it will be strange not having Trimingham?s around anymore.

Ms Clark has been employed at the store for a year and a month but won?t receive redundancy pay because she is a student worker. However she said that it would not difficult to find employment because ?everyone feels sorry for us?.

She said that she was not looking for employment because she will be returning to college shortly after the store closes.
