Bay just squeeze home in low-scoring affair
SEA BREEZE OVAL (Bailey’s Bay won toss): Bailey’s Bay (2pts) beat Willow Cuts by nine runs
Willow Cuts failed to chase down 97 for victory after doing well to restrict Bailey’s Bay to fewer than 100 in the Twemty20 competition at Sea Breeze Oval on Saturday.
Bay were kept to 96 for seven from their 20 overs but Cuts, after losing a wicket in the fourth ball of their innings, stumbled to 87 for nine.
Kavon Fubler and Kwasi James offered some resistance in the middle order scoring 18 and 20 respectively, and James showed plenty of promise on his debut after transferring from Somerset.
James departed in the thirteenth over just when he was starting to accelerate the scoring.
Cuts were 50 for four then and the loss of Fubler two overs later left Cuts in some trouble at 66 for five, still needing 30 off the final five overs.
Derrick Brangman, making his debut for Bay, came back to claim two more wickets to finish with figures of four for 15. Brangman bowled the first over of the innings and then the last when Cuts still needed 18 off that final over.
Dean Stephens hit him for a six on the third ball, but after taking a single the next ball, the threatening batsman spent the last two balls of the innings at the bowler’s end, before Kamal Bashir was bowled by Brangman.
Stephen Outerbridge claimed two for 14 and captain Rodney Trott two for 19.
In the Bay innings, Tre Manders top scored with 30, while Terryn Fray scored 20 as the pair led Bay’s recovery after openers Azende Furbert and Outerbridge fell cheaply to Micah Simons.
Kavon Fubler led the Cuts bowling, taking three for 16 with his left-arm spin, while Simons took two for 18 and Bashir and James one apiece.
