Two South Africans charged with importing heroin to the Island were remanded to custody on Tuesday.Ujihinere Posper Momubaghan, 38, of Pretoria, and Lillian M. Ramphele, 44 of Limpopo, were jointly charged with importing, possession and conspiring with others to import heroin into St. George?s on June 30.

South Africans face heroin charges

Two South Africans charged with importing heroin to the Island were remanded to custody on Tuesday.

Ujihinere Posper Momubaghan, 38, of Pretoria, and Lillian M. Ramphele, 44 of Limpopo, were jointly charged with importing, possession and conspiring with others to import heroin into St. George?s on June 30.

The pair were not required to plead to the charges as they are indictable and must be answered in Supreme Court.

Momubaghan was represented by Larry Scott and Ramphele by Charles Richardson.

The defendants were remanded in custody until July 19, when they will appear in court for mention.

27-year-old denies machete possession

A Southampton man denied a charge of possessing a machete and a scalpel in a public place on Tuesday in Magistrates? Court.

Ibe K. Todd, 27, of Middle Road, Southampton, was bailed at $2,000 to appear for trial on September 21.

Todd pleaded not guilty to possessing the machete in Pembroke on June 29.

?I had it, but it was for landscaping,? he told the magistrate. He denied having the scalpel but admitted to telling Police ?f*** you guys. I?ll f*** you guys up?.

?I did curse them off,? he said. ?They had no right taking me off the bus like that.?

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said Todd will be sentenced for the swearing offence in September.

Drunk driver fined $1,000

A drunk driver was fined $1,000 and banned from driving all vehicles for 12 months in Magistrate Court on Tuesday.

Danny James Kendall, 26, of Knapton Close, Smith?s admitted to driving while his ability was impaired by alcohol.

Crown counsel Oonagh Vaucrossen said at 3.37 a.m. on June 2, Police saw Kendall swerving a livery cycle across Front Street.

Kendall refused to give a breathalyser reading.

Tourist fined for cannabis cigarettes

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined a frequent visitor $1,000 this week for having seven home-made cigarettes containing 1.93 grams of cannabis.

A drug-sniffing dog ?alerted? Police to Michael Moosher?s luggage last week after he arrived on a commercial flight from the US, and Moosher blurted out ?what should happen if I did have something? as officers interviewed him.

Moosher, 50, told Mr. Tokunbo: ?I have been coming here for a number of years with my family. It was a stupid mistake, my apologies. I will never do it again.?

Man denies weapon possession

A 21-year-old Smith?s Parish man will be tried in September after he denied this week that he had a weapon in a public place in Pembroke on June 25

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner released Bennett A. Phipps, of Town Hill Road, on bail of $1,000.

$800 fine for swearing at Police

A Devonshire man was fined $800 last week in Magistrates? Court after he admitted to using offensive words and telling a Police officer to get a real job.

Stephen Ming, 33, of Mingston Lane, was pulled over by the Police officer on April 19 for speeding on Church Road. Later in the day he saw the same officer and yelled: ?Get a real job! F**k you, you?re a f**king c**t!?

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner told Ming he hoped he had a proper job because he was getting an $800 fine.
