A hot and spicy salsa night
Get ready, salsa fans! Latino recording star Alex Fox is returning to Bermuda this month, and a feature of his free concert in Barr's Bay Park on June 22 will be a competition to find the best salsa dancer in Bermuda. You have been warned!
The crowds who packed the Pitts Bay Road venue last year will remember that spectators spontaneously danced in front of the stage, a lucky few with Mr. Fox's lovely wife and professional dancer, Lisa. This year, organisers have taken the concept further and are providing a special enclosure for dancing, is well as a competition to determine who has the hottest salsa feet in town.
The Bermuda Salsa Association dancers, Azucar, will also perform.
Once again, the same generous, anonymous Tucker's Town benefactor is responsible for bringing the hugely popular Mr. Fox and his band to Bermuda, in part to raise money for PALS, and also to give Bermudians exposure to a different musical genre.
Local reinsurance companies, ACE Group Bermuda and Partner Re, are sponsoring aspects of his visit, with the latter donating prizes for the salsa competition. Singer/guitarist and recording artist Mr. Fox will be accompanied by his five-piece band, which includes his two sons, Christian and David Fox, as well as Eddie Montilla, Alfredo Oliva, Bernard Soto, and dancer Evelyn Ortmann. Mrs. Fox is not accompanying her husband this time, having recently given birth to the couple's second child and first son.
In addition to the Barr's Bay Park concert, Mr. Fox is giving two other performances to which the public will have access. On June 20, he performs at the Blue Juice bar on Bermuda House Lane from approximately 10 p.m. to 11.15 p.m., and on June 21 he and his band will entertain 200 guests at a special fund-raiser dinner to be held at the Elbow Beach hotel's Lido Marine Terrace.
The event will begin at 7.30 p.m., dress is smart casual, and tickets ($125 per person) are now available from Mickey's Bar and restaurant, which is adjacent to the Lido Marine Terrace. $25 of each ticket will be donated to PALS, as will the proceeds of a silent auction, items for which have been generously donated by businesses, private citizens, and artists.
The following evening, June 22, is the big Barr's Bay Park concert, thanks to the generosity of the Corporation of Hamilton which is making the venue available, and for which admission is free. However, PALS volunteers will be on hand to accept donations from anyone wishing to give.
In view of limited parking in the Pitts Bay Road area, ACE Group Bermuda is making parking available in its new global headquarters building until midnight, with extra security. (Follow the signs). While this is free, the company is suggesting that users donate $5 to PALS, whose volunteers will be on hand to collect.
Given the huge response to last year's free concert, patrons are encouraged to arrive at Barr's Bay park in good time, particularly since the Newport-Bermuda yacht race participants will also be in town, and will no doubt swell the numbers.
As with last year, boats are again welcome to raft up off the park.
Food and beverages, prepared by Tuscany restaurant and Blue Juice Disco Bar, will be available for sale, as will Mr. Fox's CDs. In the event of rain, the concert will be held the following day, Sunday, June 23. If it rains then, the event will be cancelled.
Argentinian-born Mr. Fox delights audiences with his blend of music that combines classical rumba and flamenco rhythms with a Mediterranean flair. Based in Miami, he also has a large international following, and regularly plays before audiences of thousands. His talents have been enthusiastically received in countries as diverse as Turkey, Australia, Indonesia, Lebanon, Spain and The Bahamas. Highlights of his career include performing for President Clinton, recording with Julio Inglesias on one of his albums, and also recording many of his own albums on his own label.
