Barboza's clean sweep

sailing to win all four races and take overall victory in the inaugural Etchells Invitational Championship on Sunday.

In a 13-boat fleet which contained almost all of the top names in local sailing, including Peter Bromby who normally would have been favoured in the 15-20 knot breezes, Barboza controlled every race.

"There wasn't much we could do,'' said Bromby, who finished second in each of the four races for second overall. "Adam was higher and faster than us and he sailed well.'' There was only one leeward mark that Bromby reached in front of Barboza, but the Atlanta Olympian couldn't hold off his rival who demonstrated superior upwind speed. "It makes a change to see Bromby behind,'' said Barboza, who also beat Bromby in this year's Nationals.

The day's real battle was for third place with Stevie Dickinson eventually pipping Paula Lewin. Andreas Lewin placed fifth and Allan Williams sixth.

David Lamb, president of the Bermuda International Etchells Class, who sails with Bromby, said of the event: "It clearly fills a gap in the sailing programme in Bermuda. We'll be back next year.''
