Rice targeted for NFL golf event

Hall of Famer: Rice could play at the Bermuda Golf Classic in April

Bermuda’s golfers will have an opportunity to play alongside NFL Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Joe Theismann if the organisers of the Bermuda Golf Classic get their way.

The tournament, which returns for its second year in April, is lining up a host of American Football stars past and present to play at Port Royal Golf Course.

Rice and Theismann have tentatively agreed to take part, as have Brian Urlacher, the former Chicago Bears linebacker, and Mark Rypien, the former Washington Redskins quarterback.

All four have been invited to the event, which runs from April 13 to 17, by Billy Joe Toliver, who played in Bermuda last year and is a regular on the celebrity golf circuit in the United States.

Other players who organisers hope may attend include Drew Brees, Michael Vick, and Jeff Saturday, the former Indianapolis Colts centre, who is now an analyst with ESPN.

As well as an expanded field of 50 players, up from 27 last year, the format for the tournament has been changed with individual golfers now paired with an NFL star for the pro-am round.

Golfers can also enter the 36-hole stroke play event, and will be able to draft the NFL player they want to play with in the pro-am scramble.

There are a variety of individual and corporate packages available for the event, with prices starting at $1,000 for entry into the stroke play and tickets to the welcome reception.

Organisers are also looking for volunteers to help staff the event, and anyone interested in being involved should e-mail info@bermudagolfclassic.com.
