Horton pleads for caution on the roads
Home Affairs Minister Randy Horton has again called for motorists to take significantly greater care on the roads following the tragic death of 15-year-old Krystle (Maya) Babon in a weekend accident.
In a statement released last night, Mr. Horton also promised to make available to Police all possible resources at Government?s disposal as they continue in their wide-ranging search for the missing Cooper twins.
?Our community is reeling from events that have had a profound and most unsettling effect upon us all,? he said.
?The life of a vibrant 15-year-old has been lost all too soon. Whenever any member of our community loses his or her life, regardless of the circumstances, we as a community are worse off. When the deceased is a young person cut off in the prime of her productive years, we are sadder still. My thoughts and prayers at this time are extended to Krystle?s family and close friends.?
?As the Minister with responsibility for public safety,? he continued, ?I would like to reiterate the importance of motorists, especially motorcyclists and those who drive public and private vehicles, to exercise care and caution as they traverse Bermuda?s winding and often crowded roads. There are a number of dangerous practices that have become almost habitual and must cease forthwith. These include travelling at excessive speeds, tailgating, overtaking on a yellow line or on dangerous bends and wearing improper headgear, among others. I know I have the full support of the Police Commissioner when I say that persons found guilty of these kinds of offences will experience the full weight of the law.?
Meanwhile, the kidnapping of the Cooper twins has sent shock waves through the community, Mr. Horton said, and he urged anybody who can assist the Police in their investigation to do so as a matter of urgency.
?The reported assault on, and disappearance of, Jahmal and Jahmil Cooper are without precedent in Bermuda, hence the collective chill and despair that we all feel with each passing day,? he said.
?The people of Bermuda may be assured that the Commissioner of Police and, indeed, the entire Bermuda Police Service, have amassed all of the resources available to them as they conduct their investigation. Also, foreign experts have been invited to Bermuda to assist with this investigation and the Government remains committed to the provision of any additional resources that are required in order to solve their disappearance... Certainly our thoughts at this time are extended to the mother, other relatives and friends of the missing Cooper twins.?
