archaeological history -- en masse.

During the week of August 10, the Bermuda Maritime Museum will offer a marine archaeology camp -- "Shipwrecked!'' -- at the Royal Naval Dockyard.

The camp, catering to 21 children aged 12 to 14, will focus on the exploration of Bermuda's maritime heritage and an introduction to underwater archeology.

The week will include presentations by marine experts, artifact handling and conservation, and research with graduate students of archaeology.

The children will also participate in many activities, including a hike to Fort Scaur, a paper conservation project, model boat building and an overnight stay at Dockyard.

And the children will also have an opportunity to snorkel in an enclosed area adjacent to the Dockyard, littered with maritime artifacts placed there by the Bermuda Maritime Museum.

The children will be taught by qualified instructor Cesare Filice, member of the science department at Mount Saint Agnes Academy.

Originally scheduled for the weeks of August 10 and August 17, the camp's second session has been axed due to lack of subscription.

"We hope to increase the marine archaeology interest level among young people, while at the same time boost our family membership programme,'' said programme coordinator Jaqueline Horsefield.

Unfortunately, it is too late to register for the camp. However, Ms Horsefield hopes to offer the camp on an annual basis. Sign up early for next year, she advises! Ms Horsefield can be reached at the Maritime Museum on 234-1333.
