Bulford lawsuit for seized items still on – lawyer

Despite his imprisonment, Kennith Bulford, 35, is expected to continue his lawsuit against the Government to regain items seized during a raid on his apartment.

Bulford's attorney, Saul Froomkin, said that despite his client being found guilty last week of allowing his premises to be used for drug purposes, the lawsuit would continue.

Police seized a number of items held in a locked safe during a raid of Bulford's apartment under the misuse of drugs act in October 2008, including diamonds, jewellery, US and Bermudian cash and two gold bars.

The total value of the items in the safe is around $57,450.

In August, Mr. Froomkin filed a writ calling for the items return, stating that despite the search, no charges had been filed against Bulford.

The writ was later used as evidence in the case against Bulford, who was sentenced to one year in prison last week.

Opposition leader praises Invictus film

Opposition Leader Kim Swan praised a special showing of the film "Invictus" organised by Imagine Bermuda.

The film, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon, is about Nelson Mandela unifying South Africa in support of the country's rugby team, bringing the racially divided population together in a time of turbulence.

Prior to the special screening on Friday, 12 Bermudians were honoured for their contributions to the community.

Mr. Swan praised the event, and said that the film can serve as a lesson for Bermuda.

"It's a real example of the courage required to do and say what is right, and also an example of the small steps required to heal a socially challenged country and its people.

"The example of Nelson Mandela, who was able to put the bitter past of injustice and imprisonment behind him to lead his people, and the timing of this film in relation to the Bermuda experience is significant."

Fight causes bus driver to call Police

A woman bus driver was forced to call the Police after a group of young men got into a fight on her bus.

On Thursday at 10.15 a.m., Police received a report from the bus driver, who was uninjured during the incident.

She told Police she picked up the men from the bus stop near Arnold's Supermarket, in Sandys, after 5 p.m. on Wednesday and continued driving on her scheduled route heading west.

As the bus reached the area of Somerset Road and Scaur Hill, the driver noticed the group was fighting and pulled the bus over and called the Police.

When the young men realised the Police were called, one of them approached the driver and showed her an unknown object in his jacket. Then the men ran off the bus.

The driver described the main suspect as a brown-skinned male wearing a black jacket.

Police are investigating the matter and anyone with information should contact the Somerset Police Station on 2341010 or Crimestoppers Bermuda on 8008477

Driver fined $1,000 for flouting ban

A man was landed with a heavy fine for flouting his driving ban and then pretending to be someone else in a bid to get away with it.

Magistrates' Court heard that Eric Burch, 38, of Green Acres Road, Devonshire, was convicted of dangerous driving on June 27 but did not pay his $400 fine.

He was also disqualified from driving for a year and handed seven demerit points.

On Wednesday, January 6, Burch was stopped by the Police at Spanish Point, riding a motorcycle despite his ban.

He lied to the officers that his name was Raymond Spencer, and gave a false date of birth too. The Police caught him out when those details were not found on their system.

He spent two nights in custody before being brought to Magistrates' Court on Friday, January 8, where he pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and to a further offence of disobeying a traffic sign while riding the same cycle on July 16.

Burch told the court he'd not paid his fine for dangerous driving because he had a broken leg and has only recently found work on the hustle truck.

Apologising to Magistrate Archibald Warner, Burch said: "I can assure you that it won't happen again."

Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him a total of $1,000 and meted out seven demerit points.
