Market Night comes to town
Diana Amos, public relations officer of St. George's Market Night, is very positive and excited about the old town's `Market Nights' which are held every Tuesday evening from 7 p.m. until 9.30 p.m. on the Town Square.
"We will be promoting ourselves and displaying our works, about 25 vendors, each Tuesday evening and this will continue through September 30," said Mrs. Amos, a well known artist who shares an art studio in St. George's with her husband, Eric Amos, known for his wildlife works.
"Everything sold is made in Bermuda such as various art forms from water colour prints and cedar work to delicate jewellery and food stalls,"
In addition to the vendors, there will be a disc jockey playing Island music and live musical performances between 8.30 to 9.30.
The Bermuda Gombeys will also be available near the start to sign autographs. Later they will perform in all their rhythmic glory!
One of the most interesting events will be the weekly duckings conducted by the Town Crier, E. Michael Jones, which take place at about 7.30 each Tuesday night. Mr. Jones may have his pet parrot perched upon his shoulder as he re-enacts a historical practise.
Mrs. Amos said: "The major sponsors of these events are TBI, Belco, Bank of NT Butterfield and the St. George's Club. Other sponsors are Oleander Cycles, East End Chamber of Commerce and ACE Foundation."
Throughout the evening there will be two draws for various prizes supplied by the merchants of St. George's. Each time you buy an item that costs $10 or more you will get a raffle ticket to throw into the pot. You must be present when your named is drawn.
The St. George's Market Night is composed of a host of talented people: Chairperson of the successful venue is artist, Jill Raine.Vendor donations are the duties of Adriana Roberts while Vendor organisers are Joye Outerbridge and Kersley Nanette.Treasurer is Franzine Burgess.
Entertainment organisers are Terry Roberts and Eugene Minors. The Corporation of St. George's is represented by David Raine.Advertising is handled by Sharon Minors.
"We are hoping to provide both locals and tourists with lovely things made in Bermuda by Bermudians," said Mrs. Amos.
The group encourages the stores that remain open on Tuesday evenings to offer in-house specials as well. As tourists ramble around the old town they can take advantage of sales that would otherwise not be offered.
"We anticipate each Tuesday to be a great night for St. George's, and we welcome tourists and locals," said Mrs. Amos.
