With motorbikes, African art and Bermudian talent, Summer Art Camp is set to inspire
Don't have anything planned for the summer? Well, instead of sitting around in front of a TV, how about letting your creative juices flow in the Bermuda National Gallery's (BNG's) Summer Art Camp? This year's theme is Art Inspires Art. If you're a young artist or just looking for some fun, then these are the camps for you.
The camps are themed around three exhibitions. They are Changing Gears: The Art of the Bermuda Motorcycle, African Art in Motion and Contemporary Conversations: Kevin Morris. During each week, the camp will do activities based on all three exhibitions. You will discover painting methods and ideas in the contemporary art of Kevin Morris, the design in Bermuda motorcycles, and the masks and performance elements in African Art. This art camp wants to inspire you to create your own art!
This camp is all about risk taking. "Teaching young people about art history," said Ms Howie Director/Education & Programming of BNG.
The exhibition Changing Gears is about the artistic and social functions of the Bermuda motorcycle. Possible activities for this theme will be to design your own motorcycles and, of course, a helmet.
Another exhibition, African Art in Motion, explores some of the cultures and mythologies in African art. Some potential activities for this theme include designing your very own African mask in reference to an animal.
The Contemporary Conversations-Kevin Morris exhibition is all about the artwork of the Bermudian artist Kevin Morris. His artwork tells a story or gives a message. You will see how a painting can use language. Some activities inspired by this could be making a painting or map of an imaginary place. You can also make collages of popular images. There is also the possibility of a field trip.
The age groups for the camp are from eight to twelve years old, and the dates for the camp are July 20-24, August 3-7 and August 10-14. Each week you will be doing different activities, not just the same things being repeated.
Most kids can relate to those camp experiences with loads of little kids all together in one stuffy area. Not with this camp. The limit of children per week is 12, which means that you can have the space to enjoy yourself and be inspired. This also means that you should make sure you apply soon, so that you can do the camp the week that you want before all the spaces are filled.
The main art teacher will be Sabrina Powell, a local art teacher (at Clearwater Middle School) and artist. The hours will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the location the gallery on the second floor of the Bermuda National Gallery in City Hall on Church Street, Hamilton. For those of you who are already members of BNG the cost is $250 per week. Otherwise it costs $275 per week. For more information call Lisa Howie at the BNG: 295-9428; or email at director@bng.bm.
