Smith scores in losing cause

Knocked out: Smith and Gloucester City’s FA Cup dreams are over for another year (Photograph by Akil Simmons)

Jonté Smith, the Bermuda striker, was on target for Gloucester City in their 2-1 defeat away to Staines in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round.

Staines took the lead in the 26th minute when Mitchal Gough picked out Luke Wanadio to race in on goal only to be brought down Jasbir Singh, the Gloucester goalkeeper, who was sent off.

The home side were reduced to ten men themselves just before half-time when Prince M’Bengui launched a reckless challenge on Mike Green.

Gloucester found an equaliser when Smith’s fierce shot was deflected out of Jack Turner, the Staines goalkeeper’s reach. Staines struck the winner two minutes from full time when Gough headed home from close range.
