Care and attention: Kendra L Earls, of Den & Ken Studios, makes good progress on the yet-to-be-named mural on the wall of the Front Street public restrooms, which she describes as a “jungle scene of Bermuda’s natural foliage”. Story, page 2

Local artists Kendra L Earls and Dennis Joaquin are to add a splash of colour to Front Street with a mural on the public bathrooms.

They are depicting the natural beauty of the Island painted in the style of self-taught French artist Henri Roussaeu.

The Corporation of Hamilton, Bermuda Society of Arts and Bermuda National Gallery approached local artists for proposals for different public art spaces ahead of the America’s Cup. The pair submitted renderings of the design and their work was selected for the location.

Ms Earls told The Royal Gazette: “It is almost like a jungle scene of Bermuda’s natural foliage with a Rousseau influence. I have always had my eye on that building and it was funny that they came and asked me to submit a proposal — it is like a big open canvas.

“The inspiration came from the set that we did for TEDx last year which actually got recognition from the Ted Talk Corporation. I thought it would be great to put that in colour in the style of Rousseau because I love the magic he creates with colour: he makes colour come alive.

“That is our goal with this wall — to really make it come alive. We have only put in the first layer of colour now we will go in and make up the foreground the plants and flowers and a moongate.”

Ms Earls also created a 10ft by 12ft mural in mosaic at Somersfield Academy in commemoration of Bermuda’s 400th anniversary.

She and Mr Joaquin, of Den and Ken Studios, are working on their second set for TEDx Bermuda.
