Second half goals secure Vasco win
Goals in the second half by Mark Ray and Dwight Basden saw Vasco clinch victory over BAA in this uninspiring Friendship Trophy game at Devonshire Rec.
last night.
BAA got a late consolation goal from substitute Andy McCullough, but Vasco were deserved winners of a match they dominated for the most part.
Ray gave Vasco a 1-0 lead after 56 minutes after a shot from Irving Burgess was saved by goalkeeper Paul Hayward. Ray steered the rebound home from close in.
Then Basden added the second four minutes later after full back Sinclair Gibbons crossed from the right for the striker to climb above the defence and head home from close range.
Although Vasco had called the tune up to that stage, they were unable to find a way to goal with BAA's defence, marshalled by Troy Harvey and Adam Melvin, refusing to yield.
Vasco's limitations up front helped contribute to the scoreless first half as most of their shots were struck from long range.
The first half was quiet with much of the excitement coming from an unlikely source -- two men and a pit bull dog. After 38 minutes stunned players, officials and spectators watched in amazement as a man jumped down the eastern embankment and raced across the centre of the field.
As he reached the north-west boundary another male was seen in hot pursuit with a pit bull terrier at his side, chasing the first who was now anxiously attempting to climb over the fence to avoid being caught.
The first managed to scale the 10-foot fence after a struggle and eventually escaped.
Quipped referee Esten Curtis afterwards: "I have never seen anything like it.
I was stunned.'' The extraordinary incident seemed to add flavour to the evening and on the field things picked up after the break with Vasco threatening to put the result out of reach, going 2-0 up inside 60 minutes. But BAA came back with Shawn Dill firing a good effort at goalkeeper Keenon Tucker after 66 minutes from 19 yards out.
Then Andre Thompson followed up after 73 minutes when he missed from just seven yards out after Troy Harvey had created an opening.
McCullough netted for BAA after 80 minutes, but Vasco managed to close the gates and prevent any further disaster.
