League?s top two romp clear
The first round of the Bermuda Rugby Football Union League competition for 2005/2006 ended on Saturday with the top two sides scoring big victories over their winless opposition.
Renegades head into the annual break for the World Rugby Classic at the top of the table with three wins under their belt following a 43-0 victory over Police.
Teachers are in second place after a 39-0 thumping of Mariners who are only separated from Police at the bottom of the table by virtue of having conceded less points. Both sides have identical records with a draw against each other and two losses.
On Saturday, Neil McGuiness scored two tries and Greg Garside, Mike Williams, Rod Stewart and Jon Hern added one apiece in Renegades? victory which kept alive their unbeaten record for the season.
Hern also showed his skill with the boot and added five conversions and a penalty for Renegades putting him at the top of the list for scorers on the day.
Police made a determined effort against the league leaders thanks to the return of some of their more experienced players but were unable to contain Renegades? speedy back line, triggered by Tom Healy at scrum half, who threatened every time they had the ball in hand.
Renegades enjoy depth in every position as each weekend has featured new players who have brought something new to the team.
Their combination of well-drilled forwards who rarely lose possession led by Peter Dunkerley in the back row and newcomer Marco Kielblock at second row and their attacking back line will make them a hard side to beat going forward.
The second encounter of the day was expected to be a far more closely fought affair after Mariners had defeated Teachers in the opening tournament of the season, but the challenge failed to materialise.
Teachers? back row of Anthony Cupidore, James Adderley and Bobby Hurdle terrorised the opposition and the half back partnership of David Porter and Christopher Naylor created numerous opportunities by plundering the large holes Mariners left in their defence.
Skipper Warren Clifford and vice-captain Kurt Leibel joined Porter in scoring two tries apiece and Jeff Sangster added a seventh try.
Naylor started off well with the boot but after booting two conversions failed to add to his total for the remainder of the day.
The stage is now set for the second round of league competition which begins on November 19 when Renegades and Teachers face off against each other in the curtain raiser and Police and Mariners aim to get off the bottom of the table.
