Man may be jailed for drink driving

A drunk driver has been warned he could face jail after Police caught him over the limit twice in three months.

Carlos Manuel Dos Santos Sousa’s latest offence was on Friday morning last week, when his car crashed into a motorcycle in Par-La-Ville Road, in Hamilton.

Magistrates’ Court heard that he had also been spotted in his vehicle “weaving from side to side” in Warwick Lane, Paget, on December 14.

At court yesterday, Sousa, 36, pleaded guilty to drunk driving on both occasions.

He faces a further appearance at court today, regarding an alleged drunk driving offence on November 5.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner told him: “I am thinking seriously of sending you to jail.”

Crown counsel Cindy Clarke told the court that Sousa’s accident with the motorcycle happened shortly before 11.30 a.m. on Friday.

She said the motorcyclist suffered an abrasion to his left leg and a sore back.

Police arrived to find Sousa sitting in his car, and when they spoke to him they noticed his breath smelled strongly of alcohol.

Ms Clarke said Sousa told officers: “I told him I would fix his car.”

In the previous incident, on December 14, at about 12.25 a.m., Ms Clarke said Police followed Sousa after suspecting he had been drinking. She said he came to a stop and officers smelled alcohol on his breath.

Peter Farge, representing Sousa, told the court: “I know he’s got a drinking problem. I have talked to his employer about it.

“He’s willing to put him in an assistance programme.”

Sousa, of Warwickshire Drive, Warwick, was fined $1,000 for both the charges he admitted, and disqualified from driving all vehicles for 24 months.

Mr. Warner remanded him in custody ahead of this morning’s appearance for the third charge.
