Public invited to join birdwatching event

The Bermuda Audubon Society is inviting the public to take part in the “Global Big Day” on Saturday, organised by Cornell University’s Lab of Ornithology.

The goal of the international event is for participants to together see and record at least half of the world’s bird species in a single day.

Cornell University boasts the largest database of bird records in the world, which members of the public are able to contribute to online, in an effort to study migration and improve conservation efforts.

Audubon Society president Andrew Dobson encouraged people to register online at www.ebird.org and take part in the event.

“Millions of records are in the database from observers all over the world,” he said. “In Bermuda, more than 100 users have already entered thousands of checklists of 383 different species.

“It’s a great way of keeping a record of the birds you see in Bermuda or when you go to other countries.”
