Something to think about February 8, 2000
The process is normal in trying to piece things together -- though sometimes the part in hand does not fit the puzzle.
Like the wilted tree in autumn, so shall it bloom again in spring. For the tree with the ripest fruit obeys the time and season.
Therefore, remain open to the balance, and one will always foresee the obstacle.
This is called "Beyond Stop''.
GERMAINE (RICO) SMITH Pembroke Radio ads a turn-off February 3, 2000 The following was sent to Rick Richardson, general manager of the Bermuda Broadcasting Company Ltd.
Dear Sir, Further to our telephone conversation (yesterday), I am writing with a formal complaint regarding an offensive radio advertisement for a BET (Black Entertainment Television) Comedy Show at The New Clayhouse Inn currently being aired on ZBM Power 95 FM.
I was assured that something would be done to either remove or re-edit the ad, yet it still plays today.
Yesterday, February 2, 2000 as my family was getting ready for work and school, the ad, which contained immense profanity, was aired. I had previously heard parts of the ad, but never so clearly.
The room was silent and my daughter was in the kitchen alone, and when I walked in the ad was playing, and it literally hit me. I care not to elaborate on the words of choice but how would you like to come home and find a `stranger' sitting in your kitchen or living room talking to your nine-year-old daughter or ten-year-old son about how he would like to "sex'' someone or how he plans on getting his next "spliff?'' Yes I realise that I have the option to turn off my radio or television, but let's be real; this type of advertising is pure fifth, The principle is the same.
Ezekiel 22:30 and 31 says, "And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found none. Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath; their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord GOD''.
I assure you Mr. Richardson, that I am not alone, but I `stand in the gap' with Covenant Comrades to take a stand and raise the standard -- for our children's sake.
Parents I beg you to protect your children and be very careful what you expose them to.
He that has an ear -- let him hear.
DWIGHT P. JONES Studio B Entertainment Pembroke Sadness at St. Mark's February 17, 2000 Dear Sir, It would appear that you have been asked to be very careful when reporting on the St. Mark's Church problem. And it is a problem.
There are no members of the choir any more -- not one, and we had the most beautiful choir in the whole of Bermuda, even to the point that it gave concerts during the year. This is sad.
The children in the Sunday School do not want to go over to Church to listen to "that man'' -- he speaks to them of death and other topics which could give little ones nightmares. He should speak on Bible stories such as the walking on the water, the loaves and fishes or other stories which will stay in their minds forever -- they did for me.
I think it should be pointed out that last Sunday there were under 40 people who stood up when the Bishop asked all of the St. Mark's parishioners to stand and acknowledge their new Rector.
That is very sad. If you take the Vestry and their spouses who should have been present -- that would make say 20 (give or take a few), about six members of the Hayward family who live in Smith's, the Governor's ADC who was an active member of St. Mark's and had to be present with the Governor; and I know Stanley Woolridge and his family went to "look'' so it does not make many of the regular St. Mark's family were there. Someone even likened the installation to a Woolridge funeral by the turn out.
Gary Burgess refused to sing when asked. A great many of the regular members have already indicated that they no longer plan to pledge to St. Mark's Church and many have even gone to the Methodist Church and the AME. So we are all being spread out and this is upsetting for us all.
CONCERNED MEMBER OF ST. MARK'S FAMILY Smith's Parish "Hypocrites'' not missed February 13, 2000 Dear Sir, I am writing to inform those abstaining members of St. Mark's Church and the choir that their efforts to stop the induction of Father William Hayward as Rector of St. Mark's Church on Sunday, February 13, were in vain.
St. Mark's Church has NEVER been more full and the singing was beyond compare, the choir was definitely not missed! If you feel that you no longer wish to worship at St. Mark's, may I suggest you find an alternate place of worship as your ill feelings and unChristian like manner are not welcome at St. Mark's. I, for one, look forward to worshipping with Father Hayward.
As Christians and mature adults you should be setting an example for the young members of the church, not acting like a bunch of hypocrites.
You should ask yourselves why you really come to church. Father Hayward has nothing to do with the equation, you need to solve this within yourselves.
STACEY EXELL Member of St. Mark's Church Better for whom? February 16, 2000 Dear Sir, I am in total disagreement over the decision to allow bigger cars on Bermuda's roads.
As such a small Island, we are overcrowded as it is. What about the parking problems drivers face? How will this make anything better? It won't! It looks as if Government is only passing this law to justify their irresponsible act of ordering that unnecessary Peugeot and so they may continue to order such cars in the future.
This, and other costly (to the taxpayer), decisions such as the VIP lounge for Government Ministers at the airport, the overnight stay at the Princess Hotel, the trip to Switzerland for all those extra people just goes to show what happens when people get a little bit of power.
When I voted for the PLP I thought they were planning for a better Bermuda, but it seems they are only making it better for themselves.
DISAPPOINTED IN PLP Pembroke Taxi driver impressed February 14, 2000 Dear Sir, On arrival in Bermuda via British Air on Tuesday, February 8, we travelled in a taxi from the Airport to Brightside Apartments.
I paid the taxi driver with what I thought was a $20 note. We were in packing when there was a knock on the door and to our surprise it was the taxi driver with the change of a $50 note.
I must commend him for his honesty and the trouble he went to in returning to Brightside with the change. Bermuda should be proud to have taxi drivers like him.
We would also like to thank the lady volunteer worker in the Aquarium who kindly stopped and gave my wife and I a lift into Hamilton on a very wet day.
Her kindness was much appreciated. I must say we have found most people to be friendly and have enjoyed our stay in Bermuda. A big thank you also to Mike and the staff at Brightside. I remain.
DAVID DRINKWATER Ireland What colour is justice? February 10, 2000 Dear Sir, A white Bermudian was convicted of `knowingly allowing' the propagation of a quanity of marijuana in his basement. He was tried in Supreme Court, convicted and given a custodial sentence of four years.
A black Bermudian was growing the same quanity of marijuana in his garden. He was arrested, tried in Magistrates' Court and given a suspended sentence.
How can these Islands possibly claim to promote racial harmony when the legal system is colour prejudiced! Justice? I think not...
