Internet is too slow and costly

Dear Sir,

Last week the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) raised their definition of broadband internet to 25 megabits per second (Mbps) from four Mbps, while raising the minimum upload speed to three Mbps from one Mbps. Fees for 25 megabit service (combined access and ISP) are about $40 a month.

Despite the significant sums invested in telecommunications reform, and the musical chairs being played with ownership of the Bermuda telecoms providers, the fact is that our residential internet access remains far too slow — and far too expensive. The internet is a key utility to compete in the modern world, and Bermuda is stuck in the digital doldrums.

Reforming regulation is not enough; what’s Bermuda’s strategy to improve service?
