Spiritual resolutions for 2015

Losing weight, saving money or trying something new are all popular New Year’s resolutions.

But for people in the faith-based community their goals are often to go deeper in their relationship with God.

The Royal Gazette asked some of our contacts to share their spiritual resolutions for 2015.

We hope they will inspire or encourage you to set your own ...

Dionne Greene is making it her goal to surrender more of herself to the Lord.

“In 2015 I am quitting,” she said. “I am quitting my way of doing things and saying, ‘Lord, I can’t do it without you’.

“This year I am going to trust God more — not only with the big things, but the small things too. I’m going to put God at the forefront of everything I do.”

A member of Mt Zion AME Church, Ms Greene said she would also like to be more consistent and intentional with the time she spends with God.

“I would like to live my life in such a way this year that it points others to God and God is pleased,” she explained.

“I want to be bold with my faith and unashamed of the gospel.

“Someone once told me, ‘Don’t conform to things or people. Live, say, and do what you know is right, even if I am the only one. Live by example and live on purpose.’ So for 2015 my aim is to trust God and live on purpose with a purpose.”

Cratonia Smith wants to be more prepared for the Sabbath, which begins at sundown every Friday and ends at sundown on Saturday.

“I’m a Seventh-day Adventist and someone explained to me recently how being prepared for the Sabbath can be likened to being prepared for the Second Coming of Jesus,” Miss Smith said.

“Since I certainly want to be prepared for that I’ve made it my goal in 2015 to always be ready for the Sabbath, both mentally and physically.”

The Sabbath is a time intended for rest and fellowship with God. Miss Smith admitted it’s hard to do that when you’re stressing about work or housework.

“Getting ready for the Sabbath for me is making sure that my house is in order,” she said. “If there’s anything for church that I need to do or anything that needs to be done to prepare for the fellowship thereafter, I need to make sure that it’s taken care of beforehand.

“I need to prepare my mind as well by unwinding and letting go of the normal stresses of life so that I can really focus on spending time with God.”

For Chris Crumpler, he wants to be more disciplined with his faith in 2015.

He said: “Inside discipline there is a freedom to serve with excellence that is inside a system.

“That system produces a healthy relationship and lifestyle with God which transcends to man. Over time the trust and consistency is established with God and this also transcends to man.

“When taking care of God he takes care of you, your family and desires. This discipline starts with keeping my word and having my feet stay in front of my mouth. I don’t want to suffer from the foot in mouth disease! My goal is to get up and do this every day to the best of my ability.”

Kristy Burgess wants to trust the Lord more, while standing on His word.

The verse that reminds her of this is 1 Chronicles 28:20. It says: ‘Be strong and courageous and do it. Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed, for the Lord God, even my God, is with you. He will not leave you or forsake you, until all the work for the service of the house of the Lord is finished.’

Ms Burgess said: “It’s very easy to become discouraged at times, but this verse clearly speaks to my heart by reinforcing that I need not to be afraid nor having any fear because as my Heavenly Father, He is always there guiding and protecting me.

“All I need to do is stand in faith, remain courageous and steadfast because I know within myself, I have a lot of goals and dreams that need to be fulfilled and this verse reminds me that through his guidance and love, all can and will be done.”

Allison Outerbridge’s resolution is to continue to allow God to move in her life.

She said: “I want to live fully ‘souled out’ to him. I know that whatever His will is for me, it will be done!

“So I want to live without worry of what the future holds because I know He has gone before me and paved my way already.

“My hope for 2015 is that I would just trust Him to do what He said He would do.”
