Lowe to coach Hogges
Maurice Lowe has been unveiled as the new head coach of the Bermuda Hogges.Lowe, coach of First Division BAA Wanderers, will take over the helm from Scott Morton who is unable to travel overseas this season due to work commitments but will remain on the Hogges coaching staff.Former Dandy Town defender, Lowe, said it was an honour to be named Hogges’ head coach and was excited about the challenge ahead.“I’m honoured and thankful to be given this opportunity by the Hogges’ owners and the Bermuda Football Association (BFA),” said Lowe, a BFA National Academy coach. “I’m looking forward to achieving some positive results with the team.”Paul Scope, a Hogges co-owner, is more than familiar with Lowe’s leadership qualities from their time together with the Bermuda national team.Scope was Kyle Lightbourne’s assistant when Lowe was awarded the captain’s armband despite not playing regularly under the previous regime.“I’m very confident in Maurice’s coaching abilities,” said Scope. “I remember when I was Kyle Lightbourne’s assistant with the national team; we made Maurice captain because we recognised his leadership skills even though I don’t think he had played much previously.”Scope felt it was important Morton continued to be involved in the Hogges set-up to provide some coaching continuity.“I thought Scott did a good job last season and it’s great he will still be onboard as an assistant coach,” said Scope. In essence the Hogges will become the de facto national team this summer, with the BFA planning to reintegrate some senior internationals back into the fold in preparation for the upcoming 2014 World Cup qualifiers. Several seasoned national team players were spotted training with the Hogges this week, including ex-skipper Kwame Steede, Domico Coddington, Antwan Russell and Lashun Dill.“I’d like us to be more competitive,” added Scope. “Last season we had a very young team and I think we did better than our final league position suggested. With a more experienced team I think we will get better results.”Despite significantly reducing the level of financial support they gave the Hogges last year, the BFA will continue to take control of team affairs and off field administration.Mark Wade, the BFA player development committee, chairman, said: “We will be responsible for game day operations at home and will do most of the travel arrangements.”Scope said the BFA’s administrative assistance was invaluable: “We couldn’t (continue) without the BFA at this point. It really is a partnership now and we need the Association’s involvement.”It remains unclear whether Shaun Goater will be involved in any capacity this term, while his fellow Hogges co-owner Kyle Lightbourne has opted to take a summer break from football.“Kyle has decided not be involved in the coaching,” added Scope. “He coached for a several seasons without any compensation; I don’t think many people realise that. He definitely laid the foundations and everyone knows the respect I have for Kyle as a coach.“There’s a dialogue going on between Shaun and Devarr Boyles (BFA youth director) and I’m hoping he will get involved in some fashion. He has a lot to offer and has proven he’s a very talented coach at North Village.”Hogges’ first game of the Premier Development League (PDL) campaign is against Reading United at BAA Field on Friday, May 27.
