Denmark openers take sting out of Bermuda

Denmark 189-5 Bermuda's biggest total of the tournament was matched by the largest opening stand as Denmark made easy work of their opponents at St. David's yesterday.

The five-wicket loss was the fourth straight for Bermuda, though there was some hope that fortunes might have been changing after the local youngsters batted through their allotted overs.

A second-wicket stand of 44 between the third and 15th overs helped Bermuda to recover from the early loss of Coolridge Durham. Then after Denmark fought back to have Bermuda 139 for eight in the 40th over, some tail-end resistance from Quincy Burgess, Monroe Darrell and Justin Robinson produced 49 for the last two wickets.

Burgess, playing his first match, scored 29 not out in 42 minutes while Darrell scored 10 and Robinson 15 not out. The ninth wicket put on 26 while Burgess and Robinson added 23 for the unbroken 10th wicket.

Ricardo Brangman also contributed 29 higher up the order in 56 minutes while Chris Foggo scored 20.

Amjad Khan claimed three for 24 and Omer Farooq three for 27, both from 10 overs.

Denmark passed the 103-run opening stand Ireland had against Bermuda last weekend when Jesper Hansen and Andy Lambert added 131 in 24 overs.

Lambert, an elegant left-hander, hit 81 not out off 70 balls, including eight fours, while Hansen's 66 contained nine fours and a six.

After Durham held a return catch to dismiss Hansen, Bermuda grabbed two more quick wickets to make it 145 for three and respectability was put in the defeat with further dismissals at 152 and 178.

Durham's second spell produced three wickets, albeit for a costly 60 runs in 10 overs, while Quinton Sherlock claimed two for 57.

Scotland 197 Holland 110 Crafty off-spinner Ross Mitchinson snatched five wickets for 21 runs and opener Fraser Watts struck 48 to lead Scotland to an emphatic, 87-run victory over Holland at Sea Breeze Oval yesterday.

Spearheaded by Mitchinson's haul off just 7.4 overs, Scotland's bowling attack severely restricted the Holland batsmen, forcing them to play cautiously from the outset after dismissing openers Strijder Faul (nine) and Tobias de Rooy (six) with 35 runs scored.

Holland's task of reaching their winning target of 198 diminished even further when two more wickets fell for the addition of 26 runs. But stability came when Victor Grandia (25) and Timothy Crowlesmith (six) added 23 for the fifth wicket.

However, once the latter was sent packing by Mitchinson, the slide continued and it was just in a matter of a few overs that Holland's batting folded completely, the end coming after 34.4 overs.

Gregor Maiden was the other prominent bowler for Scotland, taking two for seven off nine overs, including two maidens.

Earlier, Scotland proved that they had recovered from their first loss on Thursday to Ireland by giving a respectable batting performance.

They got another solid opening stand with Watts and Greg Butchart putting on 60. Then with contributions from Blain (21), Alan Speirs (19) and Ayaz Gul (14), they managed to come within three runs of the double-century mark.

Medium-pacer Jurriaan Geleijnse was Holland's top bowler with three for 27 off 7.3 overs, including two maidens while Sebastiaan Gokke took two for 38 off nine overs with his gentle medium-pace.
