Gribbon fires Wanderers into third round
St.George's 0 Having at least 75 percent of the play and hitting the framework twice counted for nothing as Second Division St.George's were bundled out of the FA Cup by the Commercial League champions at BAA Field yesterday.
Wanderers, who beat another Second Division team, Prospect, in the elimination round, rode to victory on Thomas Gribbon's first half strike.
It was a well-taken goal by the stocky built Scot who got on the end of a long ball upfield in the 20th minute and lobbed his shot over the head of goalkeeper Corby Durrant who was caught off his line.
Up to that point the Second Division cellar dwellers looked more likely to score after taking the game to their opponents.
Their best chance to break the deadlock came in the sixth minute when Yuseff Pitt got on the end of Marlon Outerbridge's cross from the right but put his shot against the upright with 'keeper John Doran beaten.
Pitt laid on a good chance for Marco Lovell in the 24th minute when his cross resulted in the ball slicing off the boot of a BAA defender and Lovell turning and shooting wide of the target from just six yards.
Gribbon, a threat to St. George's with his speed and strength, almost added a second in the closing seconds of the half when his shot went just wide of the far post. At the other end Delby Borden was inches too high with a long range shot.
St. George's kept up the pressure in the second half with Lovell's 78th minute effort touched onto the bar by Doran before Neil Paynter followed up with a header that was blocked on the line by Brian Cook.
Again, against the run of play, BAA almost scored in the last minute.
Substitute Steve Irvine's cross from the right found David Youens who shot wide of an open goal.
Som. Eagles 1 YMSC 2 (after extra-time) A rare blunder by goalkeeper Adrian Burrows five minutes from the end of extra-time floored Eagles at White Hill Field yesterday.
With the scores level at 1-1 and Eagles deserving of at least a replay, Burrows raced out of goal and with feet first sent Social Club forward Malcolm Hewey tumbling to the ground.
It was from the resulting penalty that Tokia Russell slammed home the winner to send Social Club through to the third round.
Eagles paid the penalty for earlier misses in a game that saw Social Club's attack also misfiring badly.
Eagles held a 1-0 lead at the half after Tyrone Smith scored on 41 minutes, lobbing the ball over the head of the goalkeeper after taking a cross from Jelani Butterfield.
Russell, however, snatched the equaliser for Social Club three minutes after the break when he netted from the penalty spot after a foul by an Eagles defender.
The home side fought back only to see some good approach work end with poor finishing.
Social Club had a chance to settle the match after 89 minutes but Ross Parsons watched in agony as his blast from 18 yards was brilliantly tipped over by the agile Burrows.
Eagles were reduced to 10 men soon afterwards when goalscorer Smith was sent off by referee Gregory Simons.
After an eventful first period of extra-time, Social Club clinched it as Hewey broke through the defence only to have his progress halted by a rough challenge from Burrows.
Eagles were down to nine men when Quincy Brangman was ejected right at the end for using foul language.
MR Onions 2 Paget 2 (after extra-time) A late equaliser by substitute Shawn York saved Second Division Paget from an embarrassing loss against their Commercial League opponents at White Hill Field.
York blasted home from an angle on the right after 117 minutes just as it seemed Onions would hold on for the win.
Onions had taken the lead through Gary Wilson after 50 minutes but Paget levelled five minutes later when Dennis Williams netted from the penalty spot after Matt Perry fouled the hard working York.
York came close to putting Paget ahead after 98 minutes but his shot struck the post and was cleared.
After 105 minutes centre-back Kevin Smith fouled Andy Robinson and the latter put Onions ahead 2-1 from the spot.
