Fillip in store for Fame Magazine fans

Fans and collectors of old Fame Magazine issues can now contribute to a worthy cause at the same time as adding to their stockpiles.

Mrs. Peggy Burns, a part-time volunteer at the Physical Abuse Centre, is selling copies of the long-defunct general-interest monthly at $5 apiece and donating a percentage of each sale to the Centre.

Fame, which counted such current notables as Deputy Opposition Leader Ms Jennifer Smith among its staff writers, regularly profiled leading Island and international figures and generally served as a window onto Bermudian life of the 1960s and '70s.

Fame ceased publication in 1975.

Mrs. Burns, who said she scoured many attics and yard sales to acquire her collection, currently has 962 copies of some 16 different issues. Anyone interested in buying a copy can reach her at 292-1398.

A new charity, the Barbados Association of Bermuda, was established on March 11 and is expected to be registered under the 1978 Charities Act soon.

Under the presidency of Mr. Wilhelm C. Bourne and the vice-presidency of Ms Margo Greene, a management committee of ten will be working on a programme for the next 12 months and advising the community of its plans.

Membership in the association is open to all and can be acquired by writing to the Barbados Association of Bermuda, PO Box 2766, Hamilton.

Paget Lions Club has welcomed three new members to its fold.

Installed by president Mr. Arthur Tatem at the service organisation's April 26 meeting, the new additions consisted of Ms Sabrina Trott, Mr. Brent Minors and Mr. Vernon Dill.

"We extend a hearty welcome to these new members and sincerely trust that they will enjoy being a part of the fellowship of the Paget Lions Club,'' a recent club newsletter announced.

The new members were introduced for inclusion to the club by long-time Lion Mr. Ivan Smith.

*** The parents of children with learning disabilities now have a new support organisation to turn to in the form of a group called BOLD.

BOLD, which stands for Bermuda Overcoming Learning Disabilities, will hold its first support group meeting on May 15 at the Reading Clinic in Pembroke.

Interested parties are requested to show up at 7.30 p.m. sharp.
