Watson meets athletic legends at IAAF gala
Bermuda National Athletics Association president Donna Watson rubbed shoulders with some of the sport’s biggest names at the recent IAAF centenary ceremony in Barcelona.Watson attended the glitzy gala with teenage athlete Chas Smith, who competed in the high jump and long jump at this year’s Carifta Games, with the pair meeting legends such as Kip Keino, Bob Beamon and Ed Moses.Olympic champion Usain Bolt and Allyson Felix were named male and female athletes of the year at Saturday’s event.Jamaican Bolt, who retained his 100 and 200 metres titles in London in August is the first man to win the award four times, while American Felix was honoured for her gold medal in the 200 metres.Watson said the ceremony, which marked the world governing body’s 100 year anniversary, had been an unforgettable experience.“What an event that turned out to be. To meet so many of the track and field legends like Bob Beamon, Renaldo Nehemiah, Ralph Boston, Edwin Moses, Alberto Juanterena and Kip Keino, plus some of the present day athletes like Usain Bolt, Allyson Felix and David Rudisha . . .”The male and female rising stars of 2012 were named as Trinidad’s Olympic javelin gold medallist Keshon Walcott and Bahamian sprinter Antonique Strachan, who both claimed gold at the Carifta Games in Bermuda this year.Added Watson: “This was something that will never be forgotten and (I was able to) build and develop several new relationships.“Speaking to Chas and his dad this was a trip of a lifetime that they will never forget.“Just being in the room with some of these legends was humbling in itself and they were humble themselves.”
