Nusum backing team to erase penalty misery
Arsenal coach John Barry Nusum believes his side are good enough to go one better this year and lift the 2011 Island Soccer League (ISL) crown after their heart breaking penalty shoot-out loss to the Storm in last year’s final.Nusum, who is entering his second season as the boss of the ISL outfit, is set to finalise his squad at this weekend’s ISL draft at Fairmont Southampton Hotel after protecting several valuable members of last year’s team.Forming the core group of players which the Wolves coach will look to throughout the season are Ralph Bean jr., Cornell Castle, Cecoy Robinson, Jason Smith, Ijahmon Mallory, Fabian Frankson, and Hobte Burrows.Putting the remaining pieces to this year’s puzzle may be easier said than done, but Nusum reckons this year’s version of Arsenal will be just as good, if not better then last season’s side if he can get who he wants.“If we can do the same thing we did last year this year we should be ok, we have the same core group and we should be fine as long as we play football,” said Nusum.“As far as having a good team, we protected seven of our players from the draft and kept a good nucleus of the side that made it to the finals last year and this is a good thing from our standpoint, keeping the unity in the team.“Also we are keeping the same fan base that follow these players so it helps us out in the bigger picture make our club a name in the league.“We just need to do what we were been doing all of last season, for the final to go to penalties that shows that we put in the work, and in this situation a bit of it is luck and a bit is skill.”Since last year’s defeat, Nusum has taken Wolves to the Shield Cup final in the domestic league, whilst digging into the brains of some of the Island’s more experienced coaches to gain valuable insight on key areas of the game.Knowing how close they were last time around, he will look to make a few minor adjustments rather orchestrate a complete overhaul as he sticks to the same philosophy that got them to the championship game.“We lost to a team that had good players in Kwame Steede, Domico Coddington and a coach in Andrew Bascome, so it wasn’t like we lost to a side that we could say we should have beaten, we lost to a good side.“It is the same thing this time around, if you recall we had the lead going into the half, so it wasn’t too much we could have done as far as changing the team, we were up against an equal team to ours and it went to the wire.“Our philosophy doesn’t change at all, we want to play entertaining football at all times and we look forward to trying to win this time around.“As far as worrying about the teams, as long as we keep our game to our strengths we will do well.“I have had more experience this time around from coaching Wolves and Bascome has helped me, a mentor in a way, to help me see things in a way.“I’ve definitiely grown as a coach but as a team if we can continue to do what we did last term, not allowing too many goals, scoring when neccessary, along with having match winners in our ranks we have the nucleus to go the final and hopefully win it this year.”
