Bid to recruit Ambrose fails
Saturday's Cricket Testimonial at Lord's have failed to materialise.
For several weeks the testimonial committee have been negotiating with Ambrose's agent about a possible visit, but the talented veteran has a busy schedule ahead of him after returning home from the recent tour of England where he announced his retirement from the Test scene.
St. Clair (Brinky) Tucker said that his committee were looking forward to surprising the Bermuda public by bringing in the big Antiguan, but reckoned that the many functions that had been arranged for him since he announced his retirement meant he been unable to sqeeze in a visit to Bermuda.
"It's unfortunate that his schedule was too tight this week, but we were really going all out to have him come here,'' said Tucker.
"This would have given the locals an excellent chance to see him just before he got out of the game, but we will remain hopeful that we will be able to get him interested in coming next year.'' This means that the event at Lord's will feature two overseas guest, namely former West Indies Test and Antiguan skipper Richie Richardson and former England and Barbadian player Roland Butcher who is also the new Bermuda national coach.
Among the local ex-players who have shown an interest to participate in the testimonial are Elliott Pitcher, Dennis Wainwright, Eugene Woods, Jackie Durham, Clyde Best, Gladston Brown, George Rock, Stephen West, Vernon Foggo, Wendell Simmons, Winston Reid, Arthur Pitcher, Oliver Pitcher, Eldon Raynor, Ken Pitcher, Mel Roberts. Others wishing to play are urged to contact Tucker at 295-5566 (days) or 297-1597 (evenings).
