Vice-captain Outerbridge axed!
Bermuda vice-captain Stephen Outerbridge has been dropped from the squad for the weekend's double-header against United Arab Emirates.
Outerbridge and fast bowler Kevin Tucker have both been punished after they turned up late for yesterday's recovery session at Horseshoe Bay, following the Intercontinental Shield defeat against UAE.
With four limited overs games to come in the next three days, Bermuda face UAE in 50-over matches tomorrow and Sunday, with back-to-back Twenty20 games on Monday.
The loss of Outerbridge, Tucker and Irving Romaine, who is unavailable for the limited overs matches, leaves Moore with a squad of 16 players for the four matches, although that may drop down to 15 depending on the outcome of Fiqre Crockwell's disciplinary hearing last night.
David Moore's decision to drop the two players is consistent with the tough stance he has taken towards discipline since arriving on the Island as head coach. Outerbridge and Tucker join Jordan DeSilva and Malachi Jones on a list of players who have been dropped for not sticking to team standards.
"Stephen Outerbridge and Kevin Tucker have been dropped because they arrived late for the recovery session," said Moore. "It's disappointing, but what can I do? They could not fulfil team standards. They may be available for the games on Monday."
In some respects the loss of Outerbridge, Kevin Tucker, and Romaine could prove useful to Moore. It will allow him to have a proper look at the likes of OJ Pitcher, Stephan Dill and Justin Pitcher, who are all in the squad for the four games that Bermuda now play. Janeiro Tucker will also take part after missing the four-day game as Bermuda look to manage his return following a knee operation over the winter.
"It's a big series for us because it's giving us an idea of how these guys are actually going to handle international cricket," said Moore. "And the issue is that we need them to handle international cricket well, and the only way we can gauge that is by watching the way they handle international pressure."
At times during the nine-wicket loss to UAE earlier this week Bermuda showed that they could cut it at the highest level, but there were also occasions when they were horribly exposed.
In the past Bermuda have learnt from their mistakes in the second half of a four-day game, only to go and repeat those same mistakes the very next game. Moore is hoping that continued exposure will cut that out, but also allow players to prove that they deserve to be in the squad.
With the likes of Terryn Fray, Dill, Tamauri Tucker all likely to get a chance to play in the next three days, the hope is that competition for places in the squad will only increase.
"Giving these guys more exposure to international cricket is only part of it," said Moore, "it is also a chance for them to show what they have to offer."
Bermuda squad: David Hemp (Captain), Chris Foggo, Fiqre Crockwell, Shannon Rayner, Terryn Fray, Rodney Trott, Joshua Gilbert, Tamauri Tucker, Stefan Kelly, Jordan DeSilva, Jim West, Christian Burgess, Janeiro Tucker, Justin Pitcher, OJ Pitcher, Stephan Dill.
