Canine cop retires after nine years’ service
A long-serving canine cop commended by police as “hard working and diligent” has retired to the care of a local family.An honour guard of dogs joined police and Customs officers yesterday to pay respects to Arras, a tracking and drug and firearms sniffer who served nine years.The Belgian Malinois’ exploits included detecting $5 million of heroin and ecstasy tablets at LF Wade International Airport, said Chief Inspector Calvin Smith. The drug bust led to an arrest and criminal conviction.“Over the years, Arras has made hundreds of seizures of illegal narcotics,” Ch Insp Smith added.The Holland-born dog, known for his gentle nature, has also appeared at schools and public functions across the Island.On hand at the ceremony outside Hamilton Police Station was the dog’s partner, Pc Denise Dowling.Calling canines “integral” to policing, Ch Insp Smith said the bond between the officers was “not just a partnership; it is a family”.“We want Pc Downey to take comfort in the fact that Arras will be going to a good and loving home with the Gunn family.”Arras was presented with a service medal for his efforts and a rawhide bone.
