Bermuda's women footballers take trip into the unknown

Bermuda women's national team goalkeeper Kimisha Perinchief dives for the ball during last night's training session at BFA Field. Next month the women's team head to the Dominican Republic for Olympic qualifiers.

Bermuda women's national team will take a step into the unknown when they travel to the Dominican Republic for the preliminary round of the 2012 Olympic qualifiers.Scott Morton's side are to face host country Dominican Republic, Dominica and Trinidad at the Estadio Panamericano Stadium between July 5 9.The winner of the group will advance to the final qualification round while the runner-up will go into a play off for the third Caribbean qualifying spot. For the past two months Bermuda's team have been training at BFA Field under Morton and youth director Devarr Boyles, who admits the coaches know very little about their opponents.“It's always of an unknown when you go into these competitions,” he said. “But we know that most of the women's teams in the Caribbean play a certain style and line-up in a 4-4-2 formation. When we go into the region that's what we see. Hopefully our structure will allow us to remain competitive that's what we anticipate happening.”Boyles believes the qualifiers will offer a true gauge of where Bermudian women's football is at in its development.“There's been some inactivity on the Island with the women's team.“The last two years we've been on training tours to Reading, Pennsylvania and Tampa, so this is our first foray into the national scene for some time,” said Boyles.“After the game I guess we will know where we stand in terms of the competition. This certainly gives us an opportunity to gauge ourselves.”In preparation for the qualifiers the women's team have played three matches; two against BAA Under-16 boys and one against the women's Under-17 national team.Morton has named a squad of 18 players for the qualifiers. He said: “This tournament will bring out the best in our women's football, we have worked hard during these past few months and therefore our work will show how far we've come.“This will only be a testament of the hard work, sacrifice and dedication the players have put into their craft.“We look forward to making every opportunity go in our favour as we look forward to advancing to the next round.”Included in Bermuda's squad are fit-again Dominique Richardson and influential striker Chrysa Bell, who admitted he was still recovering from a sight knee injury.“Physically I might have a slight knee injury but nothing is going to stop me from playing at a hundred per cent,” she said. “I've dealt with it in terms of me getting through the tournament. Anything I have to deal with after I will do when the tournament is finished.”In 2006, Bermuda made it as far as the second round of the Women's Olympic qualifiers.Bermuda's Group B fixtures:July 5 v Trinidad & TobagoJuly 7 v Dominican RepublicJuly 9 v DominicaBermuda women's squad Goalkeeper: Kimmisha Perinchief.
