Spinner Durham destroys Police
Western Stars 133-4 Western Stars moved into second place in the Premier Division standings after a comprehensive six-wicket defeat of one-time league leaders Police at Prospect yesterday.
Once again the Pembroke club were spurred by the bowling heroics of left-arm spinner Hasan Durham, who collected his third haul of five or more wickets in as many matches.
The leg-break bowler was virtually unplayable on a damp wicket at Police Field, as he was able to extract tremendous turn, much to the demise of the home side's vaunted batting line-up.
After Allan Brangman had made the initial breakthrough, having both David Greenidge and Tyrone Smith caught in the slips, the stage was turned over to Durham and he didn't disappoint the faithful supporters on hand.
Durham was a virtual one-man show as he tortured before snatching the life away from Police, who had looked like mounting a respectable total while perched at 89-for-two at one time.
Dennis Archer, Stevie Lightbourne, Ferdinand Thorne, Dwayne Leverock and Donovan Livingston all fell victim to Durham, who ended with match figures of 5-for-34 from 11.4 overs.
His job done, Durham turned matters over to his batsmen and they too were successful, cruising past the posted target while losing just four wickets.
Opener Gregory Sampson top scored with 49, missing out on a half century when he was run out by a direct throw from Archer while attempting a second run with Treadwell Gibbons (13).
Albert Steede was next high with 42 that included six fours and a six.
Leverock was the top Police bowler with two-for-22, while Thorne claimed one-for-23.
The win moved Stars to 73 points, five behind leaders Willow Cuts.
Willow Cuts 213-7 Devonshire 78-3 Willow Cuts saw their lead atop the Premier Division sliced to five points as they were held to a draw by Devonshire during this rain affected match at Devonshire Recreation Club.
After rain interrupted the match for over an hour a draw became the only logical outcome and Cuts appeared content to bat for bonus points, staying at the crease until 5.25 p.m. before declaring.
High scoring on the day was opener Jermaine Warner, with 45, including seven fours and a six from 80 balls, with Gladwin Edness next high man with 44 from a robust innings that lasted just 32 balls and included five fours and two sixes.
Others among the runs were skipper Dexter Basden (26), Richard Basden (31) and Dwayne Basden (37).
Leon Place claimed three-for-39 from his medium pacers, Erskine Smith two-for-37 and Winston Trott Jr., and Lloyd Morrison one-for-43 and one-for-17 respectively.
The scene would later shift to that of batting practice for the home side, left with little chance of reaching the required target.
Lloyd Smith took advantage to score 39, while others in double figures were Donald Norford (16) and Terry Fray (18 not out).
Vivian Simons took two-for-11 and Richard Basden one-for-17 in brief spells.
Bailey's Bay 252-3 St. David's 105-8 Cal Dill Jr. hammered 104 not out and Clarkie Trott snatched five wickets for just 24 runs, but despite these sterling performances Bailey's Bay could do no better than draw against St. David's at Lord's yesterday.
Rain contributed to the outcome but the day belonged to Dill as Bay were able to reach a formidable total. Dill and his opening partner, skipper Chris Smith, put on 73 for the first wicket with Smith scoring 32.
Dill featured in several good stands, putting on 46 with Ricky Hill (21) for the second wicket, 59 with Jermaine Outerbridge (24) for the third and finally 74 with Irving Burgess during their undefeated fourth wicket stand.
Burgess was not out on 22.
No St. David's bowler had more than one wicket with Dale Fox, who took the new ball, particularly expensive. His one wicket cost 71 off 12 overs.
With skipper Lionel Cann holding down his end with 55 runs, St. David's managed to survive and earn the draw. The only other player in double figures was Desmond Crockwell with 11.
Bay's top bowler Trott had five for 24 off 16 overs, including four maidens.
Corey Hill had two for 35 off 14 overs and two maidens.
Somerset CC 103 St. George's 105-3 David Adams took five for 55 and Wendell Smith hit 46 not out as St. George's beat Somerset CC by seven wickets at Somerset in a game that saw rain halt play for an hour early in Somerset's innings.
The home team got a good opening stand of 40 by Tony Cheeseman (32) and Brian Williams (10) and a useful third-wicket partnership of 25 between Shannon Warner (31) and Cordell Gilbert (11). But otherwise the fragile Somerset batting provided the visiting attack with few problems.
Adams took five for 55 off 17.2 overs including one maiden while Eugene Foggo had two for seven off four overs with one maiden. Skipper Graham Fox had two for 27 off 10 overs and four maidens.
St. George's had a scare when openers Dexter Smith (0) and Eugene Foggo (6) went with just seven runs scored, but veteran Wendell Smith (46 not out) and Troy Hall (30) steered them away from trouble with a second wicket stand of 59. Then Smith and skipper Fox (19 not out) got the winning runs with a fourth wicket stand of 39.
