Bermuda strollers appear on TV in US
taking part in the Jerry Lewis Telethon.
Described by promoters as one of the greatest fundraising events in the world for muscular dystrophy, the telethon had specifically requested the performance of the Strollers.
The group, which consists of Mr. Ted Ming, Mr. Glad Ming, Mr. John Burch, Mr.
Rahan Herman Burch, Mr. Tyrone Bean, Mr. Peter (the pan man) Harris, and Mr.
Ray Ming, played during the Labour Day weekend in four different venues -- Rhode Island, Boston, Connecticut and Saugus, Massachusetts, where the telethon closed.
Mr. Ted Ming said: "We received national and cable coverage in all the places that we played. While we sang, members of the audience would donate money to `Jerry's Kids' and then make requests for songs.
"We brought out a lot of people who had been to Bermuda and heard us sing.'' He added that because the Lewis Association knew of the popularity of the Strollers, they had asked Government to sponsor the trip. But their request had been turned down.
"I had already made a commitment to play for the telethon because I thought it was a good thing, so I ended up paying for it,'' said Mr. Ming. "We knew it would be good exposure for Bermuda and for us.
"Bermuda has close ties in the United States and this was the greatest two-day telethon.''
