Wolfe bites twice, but then Cougars let it slip

Cougars will be waking up this morning wondering just how they let slip a two goal lead to draw 2-2 with leaders Village at Devonshire Rec. last night.

The Red Devils were down and out for 90 per cent of the game and looked anything but championship contenders.

Having succumbed to two goals from Heys Wolfe Village looked dead certs for a miserable weekend until Michael Hansey and Neil Robinson salvaged an unlikely point with strikes in the 67th and 72nd minute.

There was nothing pretty about Cougars but what they did for most of the game they did effectively.

They harried and jostled, knocked their opponents out of their stride and turned staunch defending into quick attacks within the blink of an eye.

Some of their tackling left a lot to be desired, mind -- Wali Salaam typical of their approach to the game.

He probably helps old ladies across the street in his spare time, but when he's on the pitch he can have the appearance of a football boot-donned bull in a china shop.

But it was just the kind of close attention that had Village on the backfoot.

In fact they could have gone behind in the first minute -- the slippery conditions catching out Zane Hendrickson as he attempted to claim a right wing cross with strikers bearing down.

Kori Goddard blazed over for Cougars and shortly after they thought they had the lead. Jahkee Smith fired the ball under Hendrickson but the linesman's flag was raised.

Kevin Jennings tried to spark some life into Village -- unleashing a blistering shot from the right which Ricardo Brangman did well to stop and then Tafari Outerbridge was unlucky to see a defender block his shot after he had lifted the ball over the keeper.

Kentoine Jennings clipped the top of Brangman's bar and post but shortly after the Village player and his fellow defenders were found wanting when Smith crossed for Wolfe to hit a tame shot which just crept under the keeper.

The normally reserved Village coach, Scott Morton, was out of his seat as the half drew to a close and he wasn't much happier when play resumed.

Wolfe, who had been heading away from goal, was allowed to turn back and drilled a hard and low shot across Hendrickson and in at the far post.

Village looked dead and buried, but they got themselves back into the game when Kevin Jennings floated over a corner and Hansey met it on the full and lashed the ball home.

The Red Devils seemed to realise they could conduct a smash and grab if they applied themselves and five minutes later Robinson was allowed to sweep the ball over the line after excellent work from Jennings again.

Village were in the ascendancy and Kentoine Jennings saw a header cleared from under the bar, while Jamaul Boyles had a shot off the line.

Another five minutes and they may have notched the winner, but a defeat would have been incredibly cruel on gallant Cougars and a point was the least they deserved.
