Village thwarted by keeper Hall's heroics

Colts goalkeeper Troy Hall pulled off two fine saves in the second half to deny North Village the maximum points they deserved from this Coca Cola First Division match at Bernard Park yesterday.

During a match in which Colts looked nothing like defending champions, Village had enough chances to win comfortably.

From start to finish Colts' attack looked inept with just striker Keishon Smith offering any sort of threat.

In the second half Village wasted at least four good goal-scoring opportunities, including an 88th minute penalty by Michael Hansey that Hall saved by falling to his right.

But it was long before the poorly struck spot-kick that Hall showed his agility. After 68 minutes he sensationally blocked a point-blank blast from Damon Wade just as Village fans prepared to celebrate.

Two other misses saw Elliott Jennings fire a volley over from close range after receiving a cross from Ralph Bean and substitute Kaija Darrell put a shot over from 14 yards after 80 minutes.

These chances livened up a game that was often uninspiring during the early periods with neither side troubling the respective defences. Hansey held Village's back line together while Mark Ray was the anchor for Colts.

Other than a few isolated attacks and long-range shots, Colts did little to impress and were put under added pressure six minutes from time when defender Jermaine Belboda was sent off for fouling the hard-working Wade.

The goals brought alive a game that was surprisingly tame in the first half when neither side could muster a threat in front of goal.

Simmons broke the deadlock after 47 minutes after centre-back Paul Towlson did the spadework. The tall defender rose high to smartly head a Sinclair Gibbons corner towards the back of goal, but before it reached its destination, Simmons nipped in to make sure.

Then Vasco added a second goal five minutes from time when Hotels' centre back Sharieff put through his own goal -- the ball actually being deflected in off the tall defender after Ottis Steede fired a blistering shot from 16 yards.

This followed a bit of hard luck for Steede after 68 minutes when his blast from 18 yards rebounded off the chest of stunned goalkeeper Stefan Dupres and was quickly cleared.

Two first-half chances for Vasco saw Keith Jennings' fierce shot from 16 yards after 15 minutes brilliantly gathered by the diving Dupres and left full back Earl Richardson hit a firm shot from 16 yards just wide of the post.

Hotels' best and perhaps only clear chance game just 50 seconds after the start of the second half when striker Dennis Robinson's shot was sensationally saved by goalkeeper Timmy Figureido, diving full length to his right.

Cougars 1 After dominating the entire match, Boulevard had to rely on a late rally to snatch maximum points at Lord's yesterday.

Tafari Outerbridge clinched the win with a goal after 83 minutes, thanks to team-mate Dwight Warren who provided the cross.

Warren coolly beat two defenders and squared back for Outerbridge to place a 20-yard lob over the head of goalkeeper Leon Place who was caught well off his line.

Boulevard had a fright earlier when they trailed 1-0 to a goal by Alajame Zuill after 10 minutes, but Warren scored from eight yards three minutes before the half to pull his team level.

Neil Robinson had two chances to put the game out of reach for Boulevard early in the second half but he blasted the ball over when well placed.
