Powerboat pilot killed in Hamilton Harbour crash
A powerboat pilot died on Sunday after crashing into a moored vessel in Hamilton Harbour, police have confirmed.
The incident happened in the area of the Lower Ferry site in Paget at about 3.45pm during a Bermuda Power Boat Association race series.
Responding to 911 calls, officers from the Bermuda Police Service were joined by emergency medical service and Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service crews.
“Upon arrival, it was ascertained that a powerboat was being operated in Hamilton Harbour when the pilot lost control of the boat and [crashed] into a stationary, unoccupied boat at its mooring,” the BPS said.
“The powerboat pilot sustained a life-threatening head injury and was left unresponsive.
“He was attended to at the scene by EMTs, but was subsequently pronounced dead by an on-call medical doctor.”
The BPS added that the co-pilot suffered a head wound.
“He was also attended to at the scene by EMTs before he was transferred by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where, at last check, he continued to receive treatment for his injury,” they added.
The BPS said they were aware that a video clip of the incident was circulating on social media and asked people to “be considerate of the family of the deceased”.
Anyone who receives the clip was asked to not share it and delete it from their device.
Police also asked anyone with information about the crash or who witnessed the incident to call the main police number, 295-0011.
The BPBA’s annual race in the harbour coincided with the eighth Scooter Mart Motor Fest, which took place along Front Street in Hamilton.
Traffic was earlier diverted on Harbour Road while emergency crews assisted from landside.
The BPBA declined to comment when contacted.
